If you’re like us and you’ve found this small gem along the shore of Lake Superior then seeing their name on this list most likely brought back a memory or two of enjoying one of the best malts you’ve ever had while overlooking Lake Superior!
The portland Malt Shoppe is a small ice cream parlor located one block North East of Fitgers. The two-windowed shop overlooks Lake Superior and the lake walk.
As the name suggests, the Portland Malt Shoppe is locally famous for its old-fashioned malts with an endless combination of ice cream and topping flavors. In addition to its world-class malts the shop also offers other ice cream treats including sundaes, floats, and ice cream cones!
The only downside of this little shop is how long the line can get (It’s not unusual for it to be +20 plus people deep!) but hey, that’s just a testimony to how amazing their Ice cream is! Trust us, it’s worth the wait and the friendly staff works hard and fast so the line moves quicker than you think!
Crank and Dasher
Crank and Dasher in Duluth, MN can be found at Fitgers and is a must-visit ice cream parlor, offering a tasty array of hand-crafted flavors. Grandma’s Ice Boxcar
Leave it to the Grandma’s to give us one of the most fun ice cream experiences in all of Duluth! They converted an old boxcar into a small outdoor ice cream parlor just a stone’s throw away from Lake Superior in Canal Park.
In addition to the variety of flavors and cones you can choose from they also offer a range of foods to enjoy by the lake! If you catch yourself a nice day in Canal Park and want to enjoy a cone by the lake as you watch the ships come in then Grandma’s ice cream boxcar is calling your name!

Bridgeman’s is an old fashion style diner in Hermantown next to the Miller Mall. They serve amazing breakfasts and burgers off their skillet but one of their most eye-catching menu sections is their mega loaded old fashion malts!
